The game crashes after an update
BeamNG.drive crashes, freezes or won't load a map after an update? Check Known Issues, try Safe Mode, clear the cache, verify game files and send us logs.If BeamNG.drive started crashing, freezing or getting stuck on a loading screen after an update, the cause is usually one of these:
- outdated or broken mods that don’t work with the new version;
- old cache files left from the previous version;
- damaged or incomplete game files;
- a known bug in the new version.
Go through the steps below in order. After each step, start the game and check whether the problem is gone.
Step 1. Check Known Issues
Open the Known Issues page. If your problem is listed there, follow the workaround in the list. Wait for a hotfix if there is no workaround yet.
Make sure you have the latest version: Steam and Epic Games Store update the game automatically, Humble Bundle versions must be downloaded again. See Updating the game.
Step 2. Start the game in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts the game without your mods and settings. It doesn’t delete anything.
- Start BeamNG.drive. The launcher window opens.
- Open Support Tools.
- Click Safe Mode.
More details: Safe Mode.
- The game works in Safe Mode → the problem is in your mods or settings. Most often a mod is outdated for the new version. See Common issues with mods and Safe Mode → What’s next?.
- The game still crashes in Safe Mode → go to step 3.
Step 3. Clear the cache
- In the launcher, open Support Tools.
- Click Clear Cache.
There is only one Clear Cache button. There is no separate “Deep Clean” option.
Clear Cache does not delete your mods, vehicles or settings. Old cache files are moved to a backup folder inside your user folder. More details:
Clear Cache.
The first start after clearing the cache can take longer than usual.
Step 4. Verify the game files
- In the launcher, open Support Tools.
- Click Verify Integrity.
You can also verify the files in Steam or Epic Games Store. See Verify Integrity.
Step 5. Check drivers and other programs
- Update your graphics card drivers from the website of your GPU manufacturer (Nvidia, AMD or Intel) and restart your computer.
- Some programs can make the game crash: overlays, antivirus, tuning and recording tools. See Incompatible software.
- If you see an error message with a code, see Common error messages.
Step 6. Still crashing? Send us your logs
If nothing helped, contact us and send your logs, so we can find the cause:
- Collect your logs as a Support ID: Gathering Logs (Support ID).
-
Submit a ticket. In the message, write:
- the Support ID;
- what you were doing when the game crashed (map, vehicle, game mode);
- which steps from this article you already tried.
If the game shows a window offering to send a crash report, please send it as well. These reports go directly to the development team, but you won’t get a reply to them, so also submit a ticket if you need help.
Your files and the user folder
Your mods, saved vehicles and settings are stored in the user folder, not in the game folder. By default on Windows it is:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\BeamNG\BeamNG.drive\current
You can always open it from the launcher: Manage User Folder → Open user folder. See User Folder.
current_backup), as explained in
Safe Mode. This way you can bring your files back later.Was this article helpful?
